Information extracted from Symantec Report released in May 2012
5.5 billion malicious attacks were blocked in 2011 ( 174 per second ) more than double the 2010 figure.
In 2011 403 Million malware variants were detected a 41% increase from 2010.
42% of mailboxes targeted belonged to executives, senior managers and knowledge based workers.
50% of targeted attacks in 2011 were specifically aimed at small to medium businesses.
Mobile phone Operating system vulnerabilities have doubled since 2010.
Social Media Networks are being targeted by cybercriminals.
These attacks lead to malware being implanted on Legitimate websites without the owner knowledge (mainly blogs and personal sites).
The Rustock botnet was shut down in 2011 dramatically reducing the number of Spam emails. A reduction of 32% from 62 billion a day ( 717,593 per second) in 2010 to 42 billion a day (486,111 per second ) in 2011.
Emails received in 2011 were more likely to contain malware via a link than via an attachment as was the case in 2010.
There was an increase of 29% in malicious website in 2011 from 2010.
Although these statistics are very worrying as long as you keep all your security up to date you will reduce the risk of an attack.
Update and scan your anti-virus software regularly
Install, update and scan a spyware removal software regularly
Manually run Windows Updates (Custom option in XP) on a weekly basis. Once updated keep rechecking till no more updates are needed (initially time consuming)
Clear down your Cookies and Temporary files weekly.
